ADDING A POP OF COLOR WITHOUT PAINTING WALLS

Do you know what Louboutin does so well? That signature accent red soul makes it one of fashion's most recognized and coveted shoes. Our interiors deserve to feel like a pair of Louboutin’s, don’t you think?

The accent wall is a common attempt to add this character and depth to a space, but I think it often ends up looking like the DIY version of design. Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE DIY, but I don’t want it to look like I’m winging it. One accent wall can come off as low commitment, a toe-dip into the world of color when your space is just crying for you to take the plunge.

But there are ways you can jump into color head first while staying in your comfort zone.

Here are three different strategies to apply bold color to your space without painting a wall. These are so intentional, they’ll pack a punch more than a single wall of color.

1. Bright Fixtures

I love this option because it’s way outside the box. If you’re thinking it looks expensive, you’d be correct. Appliances and fixtures in these vibrant, rich colors don’t come cheap! But you have a couple of affordable DIY options here.

  1. DIY your color fixtures by powder coating! You’ve probably seen those custom colored insulated cups, well the method is actually pretty flawless and applicable to fixtures. it looks professional and is much more durable than spray painting. Just make sure you exclude any plastic when doing this! Here is a link to someone who did this themselves.

If you do choose spray paint for its ease and simplicity, the key to longevity is to sand and prime with automotive primer.

  2. Duplicate high end colored appliances with high heat resistant vinyl! Cuckoo 4 Design transformed her older stove into a design feature in her kitchen. This method is temporary and affordable, you could even do this in an apartment!

2. Textiles + Furnishings

Make a statement with a single chair that stands out from the crowed! One bright chair gives an eclectic and collected look to a space, you can find unique single chairs used via Facebook marketplace or Craigslist cheaper than pairs and sets.

If you’re feeling especially low-commitment, pillows are easy to change with covers! Feeling more bold? Full seating spaces like custom upholstery and headboards can act as an accent, even if they are more muted.

When choosing your textile colors consider the color wheel- complementary colors will make your accent look more sophisticated.

3. Accessories + Art

This is where we can really have some fun! I genuinely believe the best accessories & art find us when we least expect it.

Seriously, stop at your local thrift stores, scroll Facebook Marketplace, and definitely stop by markets where you’ll catch local makers! The right pops of color will just call your name, don’t overthink it or question if it “goes”, if you love it and it calls you then trust in it.

Consider accents that aren’t just art- like the colorful German home above, you might find inspiration in candlesticks or a dish towel. Even Guy Tobin’s London home is sophisticated and classic, but its really brought to life and reads more modern with its blue framed mirror. Pottery, soap bottles, even candles and flowers can elevate a neutral space instantly.
